Weymouth College Mens Basketball

College continue form downing Woodroffe

Weymouth College continued their successful start of the season following their win over Thomas Hardye when they hosted Woodroffe School from Lyme Regis.

Weymouth never looked back from the opening 3 point basket from Sam Dodge. The home side seemed they couldn’t miss with baskets from Jack Speary and Gaz Williams, which led to them building a strong 1st period lead. Woodroffe did have moments of good play on their fast break, though Weymouth were quick to counter with several steal leading to their own fast break baskets from Williams and Dan Campbell. Despite loosing Sam Dodge to injury, with a 44 – 15 lead going into the second half, Weymouth still looked good moving ahead.

The second half didn’t start as well for the home side as they turned over the ball several times, not remaining competitive due to the score. Coach Alex Fuhrmann soon called a time-out making clear that this was not an option for his team and that they should remain competitive regardless of the score. Weymouth regained their form and despite some strong rebounding from the Lyme side they stayed calm finding the right passes, with Campbell and Williams linking up well. As the game clock ticked down Weymouth were clearly in command as Dan Campbell hit his 6th 3 pointer of the game, capping a 77 – 25 win.

Coach Alex Fuhrmann, “Some great basketball played today. The lads linked up well and despite some mental mistake they regrouped and found their form. We’re in a great position to win the division at the moment but we must make sure we stay focused no matter who the opponent so we can be true to our abilities all season.”

Scorers/Roster: Dan Campbell 31, Gaz Williams 27, Jack Speary 9, Sam Dodge 6, Connor Doherty 2, Stuart Purnell, Rob Legg.

Weymouth gets great start over Dorchester

With Thomas Hardye loosing their first game of the season it was time to get back on track. Unfortunately for the Dorchester side they were to face Weymouth College, league favourites, who played their first game of the season.

From the opening tip Weymouth aimed to control the pace of the game, with quick baskets from captain Dan Campbell and new forward Gaz Williams. Williams notably led Budmouth to the Dorset title last season, but has elected to spend a year out in Weymouth enrolling at college for extra ucas points and to the luck of Weymouth college basketball.
The visiting Hardyes side did attempt to find the goal but it wasn’t until the 3 minute that their own captain Alok Bahl hit back to back 3 pointers to ignite the scoreboard. The teams traded baskets until the 2nd quarter when Weymouth college managed to hold Hardyes to only 2 baskets and went on to close the half 34 – 14 ahead.

The second half started well for the Dorchester side with Bahl finding success with 10 of his teams first 12 points, though still found the going tough as Jack Speary hit a fast break layup. As the end of the 3rd quarter ticked down it was obvious that the visitors could certainly compete as they ended the period scoring one more point than the college side. Still with a 19 point lead, the home side wanted to prove they were the team to beat as they rallied to score again and again increasing their lead. Hardyes still showed signs of resilience with strong play from George Scott, but it was not to affect the final result as it ended in a 73 – 42 score line.

Coach Alex Fuhrmann, “solid game of basketball played by both side, though its tough as I coach both these teams. Many of these players have previously played for me at U16 for years together and they bring all they have when they square off, good to watch. Weymouth did the job today, but Hardyes showed that they are defiantly worthy of a playoff place.”

Roster/Scorers:
Weymouth – Gaz Williams 23, Dan Campbell 16, Jack Speary 14, Sam Dodge 11, Gerry Legg 5, Connor Doherty 3, Josh Turner 2, Rob Legg, Stuart Purnell.

Thomas Hardye – Alok Bahl 21, George Scott 11, Henry Anyanjo 4, Mike Toman 2, Mikey Berger 2, Nick Beer 2, Rich Cowgill, Luc Scadden, Henry Dale.

Weymouth College Boys Football Academy 2010/2011
The first half term of the 2010/2011 season has seen the College Football Academy record 2 wins, 2 draws and a defeat from  their 5 competitive matches played so far in the British Colleges League and Dorset Cup.
The results and goal scorers so far have been as follows;
BCS League - Bridgewater (away) 3 -3                     Evans (2), Mitchell
BCS League – City of Bristol (home) 0 – 6
Dorset Cup – Bournemouth (away) 4 – 0                               Austin, Lucas (2), Brown
BCS League – Wiltshire (away) 4 – 4                         Jenkins (2), Lucas, Mitchell (pen)
BCS League - Weston (home) 3 – 2                          Gould, Jenkins (2)
Every game has contained plenty of goals and incidents, at times our football has been of a very high standard and pleasing to the eye, we must also acknowledge that our opponents have also played well especially City of Bristol who were excellent on the day and well worth their victory.
It is very difficult to pick out individual performances as a key part of our good start to the season has been that every member of the squad has made a valuable contribution.  This has helped to develop a good team ethic that will hopefully grow still stronger as the season progresses.  The fact we already have 7 different goal scorers emphasises this point.  Further evidence is provided by the team coming from behind in the last 5 minutes of both away games to secure a draw rather than face the journey home empty handed.
The next period of matches begins with another away cup draw this time against Gillingham on Wednesday 3rd November in the last 16 of the Dorset Schools Cup. Following this is a home BCS League fixture at home to Wiltshire College Salisbury on the 10th, then an away BCS Cup local derby at Kingston Maurward on the 17th November.
There is a lot to look forward to and hopefully we can continue with the same spirit, producing entertaining, winning football.
